Nasa Langley Simulator

Two Smart Eye Pro 6-camera systems are integrated and installed in a commercial transport simulation facility at NASA Langley (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in Hampton Virginia, USA.

The twin 6-camera installation is used to register the gaze of the pilot flying and the co-pilot monitoring simultaneously in a Boeing 757-200 simulator.

The gaze positions are logged in relation to the 3D world model of the cockpit that has been generated in the Smart Eye Pro system. At the same time, a Smart Eye Scene Camera records the interior of the cockpit and the gaze measured by the Smart Eye Pro systems are superimposed on the recorded Scene Camera images.

The system is used for various research projects, most currently to investigate practical issues of heads up/down time with new datalink technology in the flightdeck, and to develop novel metrics associated with workload, and crew coordination.
