Unleashing the Power of Smart Eye: Transforming Research Capabilities at UND / RIAS

Smart Eye’s cutting-edge technology is set to revolutionize research capabilities at UND (University of North Dakota) / RIAS (Research Institute for Autonomous Systems). With a comprehensive setup featuring multiple cameras, EEG data collection modules, and emotion sensing capabilities, the team at UND RIAS is poised to showcase the true potential of eye tracking combined with other biosensors in understanding driver / passenger behavior and enhancing research capabilities. In this blog post, we delve into the exciting details of their project and the immense possibilities it holds.

Setting the Stage

To achieve these goals, UND RIAS acquired a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and equipped it with several advanced Smart Eye Pro eye tracking systems, including a five-camera head and eye tracking system for the driver and a four-camera setup for the passenger. Coupled with iMotions analysis software, this state-of-the-art arrangement provides a powerful platform for capturing and analyzing data related to driver / passenger behavior and responses.

The Vision Unveiled

To elevate their research capabilities further, UND RIAS incorporated additional components, such as EEG modules and facial expression analysis, enabling a holistic understanding of human responses. By combining eye tracking data with physiological signals, facial expressions and audio recordings, researchers can delve deep into the intricate nuances of driver / passenger experiences, including emotions, inflections, and urgency.

Showcasing UND RIAS’ Expertise

The project at UND RIAS took place at Camp Grafton South (an 11,000 acre Army National Guard training facility) west of UND, and presented an exciting opportunity to showcase the RIAS lab capabilities. With the support of Access ND (a scientific testing and research services company) who provided access to the range as well as all logistic support onsite, a Smart Eye team including technical experts from iMotions, UND RIAS aimed to conduct a comprehensive study involving driver setup, calibration, data recording, and analysis.

Analyzing Driver / Passenger Behavior and Performance

UND RIAS’ research agenda includes examining the behavior and performance of drivers and passengers. UND RIAS aims to provide valuable insights to contribute to ongoing research in human behavioral and performance analysis. The integration of multiple sensors, including eye tracking, EEG, emotions and audio recording, promised to deliver a wealth of data that can unveil critical patterns and inform future developments. The ultimate goal for UND / RIAS was to demonstrate their significant role in advancing research and development.

The Bottom Line

UND RIAS’ collaboration with Smart Eye and iMotions represents a significant leap forward in human behavior and performance testing capability. By leveraging sophisticated equipment, including multiple cameras, EEG data analysis modules, and emotion recording, UND RIAS is poised to provide groundbreaking insights into driver / passenger behavior and enhance research capabilities.
